Just a few weeks into January 2013, and our New Year’s resolutions are (hopefully) still underway. While you are cleaning up and putting away Christmas decorations – take a look at your home: is this the year that you want to make that big home improvement?

While we tend to focus on getting ourselves healthy in the New Year, we often overlook the health of our home. With the cold Massachusetts weather keeping us inside, it’s easy to look around for small or big improvements that could make a  huge difference to both your daily life and your home’s value.

Remodel your home for your 2013 resolution

For those DIYers, here are a few small wallet-friendly projects you can get started on now that can pay off big.

  • A New Coat of Paint. The easiest way to freshen up a room and make the biggest impact is to shake things up with a fresh coat of paint. Keep your tone similar or within the same palette as your last color to save on redecorating with expensive furniture and accessories. And if you are up for it, paint an accent wall or add a colorful pattern, such as stripes.
  • Replace Old Hardware. Gutting out your kitchen may be intimidating, but buying some modern new hardware pieces isn’t. By replacing dated hardware, you’ll bring a chic new look to your bathroom or kitchen. Most cabinet and drawer knobs simply screw off, so take a cordless drill and screwdriver to remove old knobs. Be sure to mark the measurements for your new hardware, though, to avoid the new pieces looking uneven.
  • Get rid of that clutter with a storage system. During the winter months where we are forced to stay inside, our homes can appear overwhelmingly cluttered – specially after Christmas. Finally making – and keeping – that resolution to implement a more effective storage system will really give you a less stressed 2013. Go through items taking up valuable real estate in your home: do you actually everything? Craft a simple storage system for the things you use every day, such as additional shelves in your garage or finally getting that shed built in your backyard for excess clutter. Everything else, consider donating to a worthwhile cause.
  • Brighten it up. The more light in a room, the more airy and open it feels. If your current lights plan leave you in the dark, consider new lighting fixtures or recessed lighting. Don’t forget lamps and floor lamps for your darker rooms during these cold winter nights.
